SHANG CHI: Early Dweller in the Darkness Designs

It took a bit of time to figure out the Dweller in the Darkness for Shang Chi. This was an early design I had done. I always knew that I wanted to do multiple tales/tendrils coming off of the dragons body. I wanted to really play around with pushing multiple wings and arms while trying to maintain an iconic silhouette. This was my “everything and the kitchen sink“ version, but there are a few elements here that I still really like. Looking back on the path to figuring out the design all of this exploration influenced the final creature, it was just a matter of editing past this point.
A lot of insanely talented artists worked on the show and I’m still so honored that I got some of my work on screen. When you’re working at Marvel Visual Development the real challenge is simply just not having the weakest design. I’m so grateful to have had the chance to work on the film and so thankful for Andy Park for bringing me onto a project that really wanted something scary on screen!
