This was a really exciting project for me. I was contacted to work directly for Robert Rodriguez and his son Racer. The Spy Kids franchise is very near and dear to their family, so I was incredibly honored to come in and collaborate with them. I was credited on the show as a Visual Consultant and Concept Artist. I was able to work on everything from the bad guys to the main characters costumes. It was an incredible experience.
The Heck Knight was the first assignment. We were trying to lock down the kid- friendly, Meso-American look of the bad guys, and it all started with this character. I did a wide range of sketches before we settled on the design and then built the Heck Knight in Zbrush. My model then went to VFX and pretty much shows up on screen as is.
This was one of the most creatively fulfilling projects I’ve worked on and being able to work directly with Rodriguez was an incredible experience. Lastly, I jumped at the opportunity when they had called me because I have not had the opportunity to work on many kid friendly movies and was excited to work on a project I could share with my children
