Here are my final designs for Mother from the Burroughs. Once I completed the Kids design, I moved right into figuring out Mother. Working very closely with Jeff Addiss and Will Matthews I started with sketches. Initially, my main concern was finding ways to incorporate the Kids, anatomy and creature elements into this character. My first sketches were pretty scary and over the top, but with Jeff and Will‘s guidance I realized the assignment was more about finding Mother‘s humanity than anything else. I got a few of the creature landmarks in there. I indicated the three section neck, incorporated the round back, and multiple limbs. As I was designing, the casting process for mother was going on and the role was given to the incredibly talented @nancydalyactor Nancy Daly and I had to incorporate her likeness and proportions into the design. Nancy was amazing! She really brought the character to life and wearing all of that make up and prosthetics is no small feet. What a trooper! Once the design was approved, it went to the legendary Steve Wang and his incredible team at the Onyx Forge . Steve himself and his team sculpted and built the Mother make up. I was very excited when Steve was awarded the show. As an artist, you know how collaborative the process can be. You always want to handover your work to someone that can not only take it the rest of the way but can even make it better. I’m very proud of the Mother character and everyone involved.
